Summer Weekend Warriors 8/29: Hazy (Part 2)
Part 2 of our Labor Day weekend is a little hazy, and here's why:
Sunday Lucy and I left Des Moines and made the long drive even longer by continuing on to the northwest suburbs, where Husband's family was gathered for a little barbecue. First, I have to say, when I stepped out of the car I was amazed at how cool it felt outside. After a week or more of high heat and humidity, the 70-degree weather felt AWESOME. Before I knew it, I was sitting in a patio chair with the big orange glass on the left in my hand...and as you can see, others also had big glasses in their hands. It got a little nutty. Someone may or may not have walked into a closed patio screen door. Someone may or may not have spilled their drink all over the patio. I'm not saying who. All I'll say is that damn Vodka is a sneaky beotch.
Since I was enjoying myself so thoroughly, my dear Husband took our daughter home about 8PM and left me at the mercy of his sisters. Let's just say what happens at the Pawlak House, stays at the Pawlak House...and that includes my car, which had a sleepover in the street while I got a ride home with my sister- and brother-in-law and slept in my own bed. Which consequently, I occupied until about 10AM the next morning. It's been a LONG time, folks. No hangover...but tired, so tired. I don't have to tell you what we did on Monday. I'll give you a hint...
Not much.
Happy (?) end of summer!

When Your 4-Year-Old Sits in on Your Book Club
Per Lucy, in a very respectful whisper throughout the 1-hr discussion lastnight. She was fascinated with the concept of this whole book club thing.
“Mama, why is everybody talking and I’m not talking?”
“Is she making up a story?”
“Mama, why did everybody else read the book and I didn’t read the book?”
“Is that water? Why is it just for grown-ups?”
“Wine, wine, wine. What, I’m just saying it!”
“Mama, can I have one of your strawberries?”
“Are the ladies staying overnight?”
“What are their names again?”
“Mama, what does ‘threw me’ mean?” [In reference to me saying that a certain plot twist really threw me]
“It’s been more than five minutes, and I really, REALLY want a piece of cake.”
Kids at book club are not a common occurrence, but a couple of my friends specifically asked if Lucy was going to be there, and one asked if she could come early just so she could make sure and talk with her! Lucy was very quiet and well-behaved, and I have to admit I kind of liked the idea of her witnessing and listening to a group of smart women discussing a book. My book club has been around for 12 years, so who knows, maybe in 15-20 more years Lucy will join too. J

Mom's Weekend Away
I spent this weekend in Clear Lake, IA with five of my dearest and longest-known girlfriends. We wanted to get together for a 35th birthday celebration of sorts, a milestone which each of us has celebrated or will soon be celebrating. This trip has been on the books for almost a year, and it lived up to my expectations in every way.
We...
got pedicures
sat on the dock
mixed our own drinks
brainstormed 3-year-old birthday gifts
drank some fruity drinks on a bar patio
played cards
shared photos of our kids
shopped downtown
gave Facebook tutorials
drank some beer
took walks by the lake
ate a steak dinner
played online Price is Right
gazed at the stars
ate birthday cupcakes
slept in
showered without little hands banging on the door
Most of these things have a story attached to them; I can't even begin to tell you how much we laughed. There are also a few other things on the list that I can't tell you, because you know - what happens in Clear Lake, stays in Clear Lake...or possibly Mason City :) Most of the time was spent lounging around and chatting, with a drink typically in hand. I was reminded that every once in awhile it is okay to reconnect with old friends and reminisce...and to remember who I "used" to be, before I was a wife, mom, career woman..and how we have all so successfully transitioned into our chosen roles in life. I was also reminded what an outstanding group of friends I have, and how lucky I am to have these ladies in my life. They know me well, and although we don't see each other as often as we might like, when we do get together it feels like we were just together yesterday. Old memories are sweet, but new memories are even sweeter (and funnier, in some cases!) Love you, ladies!

Violet’s Great Toilet Adventure
Lucy has a favorite stuffed animal, which is a dog named Violet. She is programmed to say Lucy’s name and sing songs about her favorite food, color, and animal. Lucy is always in range of her blankey and Violet, and can often be heard shouting “Bi-let!” when she is out of sight. Bottom line, Violet is essential to the security of our 20-month-old, particularly at bedtime.
So a week or so ago I was getting Lucy ready for bed and she announces, “potty,” which means she wants to go sit on the toilet. She doesn’t do anything mind you, except sit there, perhaps grunt, and drop toilet paper in there and call it good. I am generally supportive of this practice and am poised to celebrate profusely if and when she actually manages a single drop of pee. Right now she doesn’t have her own potty chair, so I have to hold her on the big toilet so she doesn’t fall in.
Remember that last line - that’s important.
So we finish with the faux peeing, get clean PJs on, and then I let her play for a couple of minutes while I tend to something in our bedroom. Those couple of minutes go by and she runs in the bedroom with a big smile on her face, and throws her hands up in the air. She looks very proud of herself.
Her hands are wet.
Did I shut the bathroom door when we were done in there?
$#!+.
I started toward the door and she beat me to it, running down the hall and into the bathroom, where she proudly points to Violet, who is laying on the floor next to the toilet.
Also wet.
At which point I say, “Oh no, Lucy, VIOLET!!” which proceeds to freak her out, because now she has gone from being so proud of her peeing stuffed puppy, to thinking that something is wrong with her. She starts to cry.
I gave her calm assurances and hugs, and assessed the situation. I was afraid of total Violet saturation, but obviously Lucy had been holding her over the toilet (just like Mommy does for her), because only one of Violet’s paws and a little bit of her tail were wet. I proceeded to decontaminate the pooch to the best of my ability, then stripped Lucy down, soaped and hosed her off, and put on new PJs.
Of course, Violet was not excused from her nighttime duties just because she was wet. Oh, no. The three of us read books like always, and Violet went to bed with Lucy. Her lullaby-playing paw was activated, and all was right with the world again.

Somehow, though...I have a feeling this will not be the last of Violet's adventures. Or mine, for that matter. :)

Colors
Tonight before bed Lucy and I were looking at a book that had several pictures in it with the words underneath. We were practicing identifying the different objects and saying the words. At the end was a page of colors.
As I pointed each one out, over and over, the only colors she would repeat were yellow and purple.
When I recounted this story to Husband, a little smile crossed his face.
Although the Vikings are not doing so well this year, I could tell by the look on his face that he was a very proud daddy.

This is a First (and Hopefully the Last)
Tonight after dinner I was getting ready to bathe Lucy. I still do it in the kitchen sink, because I find that the tub is frankly a pain in the butt, so I'm prolonging it as long as possible. Plus, being somewhat confined is not a bad thing for a wiggly one-year-old.
I stripped her down right in the livingroom, diaper and all. Let me just tell you, this kid loves to be naked. It's like suddenly she's really, truly free...like that flowy dress she had on all afternoon was just too confining, and she's got to let loose. Does she run around the room? No.
She giggles.
It is the funniest thing, and tonight was no exception. She stood there in the corner, looking at me, giggling uncontrollably, waving her arms in the air and bouncing up and down. It was a riot, and we all got the giggles. She wouldn't come out from the corner behind the chair, so Husband and Brandon couldn't see her, only I could from my spot sitting on the floor. She would stop, be silent for a moment, look at me with that glint in her eye, then start giggling again.
This was repeated a few times. As I watched her I giggled and waited with anticipation for that peal of laughter after she "teased" me by staring me down. But then I saw it. In that moment of silence, there it was. It cannot be mistaken for anything else.
It was The Poop Face.
No sooner did I spring into action than she delivered the prize, laid the egg, whatever you want to call it. Right there on the carpet. I was gagging and giggling at the same time. Gaggling.
The episode was brief, and could have been a lot worse, but the final salt in the wound came in the form of Husband's "I told you so." Because you see, almost immediately after I had stripped her down moments before, she tooted (it's that whole letting loose thing I guess). Husband commented that pooping in the bath would be better than pooping on the carpet.
Touche.

Breaking in Big Brother
Tonight Husband and I left Lucy with Brandon so we could make a quick 30-45 minute trip to Ultimate Electronics to view televisions. It is close by so we figured this would be a good opportunity to see how he would do. Lucy was recently fed and in a good mood when we left.
Husband and I got a good salesman at the store and after some ironic role reversal (i.e. me saying "let's just buy the TV!" and Husband hemming and hawing and worrying) we purchased a new TV and made our merry way home to see how our kiddos were doing.
The first thing I noticed was that Lucy had different clothes on. This was followed closely by Brandon saying, "how do you get poop out of that?" and glancing over at the the baby swing.
Which was covered in poo.
Apparently she did her business while sitting in the swing, and Brandon said when he lifted her out there was poo on the back of her arms and legs. Brandon's comment of "it was DISGUSTING" pretty much sums it up. The girl hadn't pooped all day (which is unusual for her), and she saved it all for the 40 minutes she was alone with her big brother. Oh, and to add insult to injury, when he was lifting her out of the swing, she spit up on the floor. She left it all on the table, so to speak. Or so we thought.
Brandon was more than willing to pass her off to me, and needless to say, a bath was necessary. As soon as she was clean and smelling good and dressed in her PJs, do you know what that little girl did? That cute little adorable girl?
The little squirt made a little squirt. And then smiled.
So I changed her, and five minutes later, Tootie McTooterson let another one go. Let's just say it was not what you would call...dry.
Just reminding us all who's boss around here!

As If the Name Doesn't Say it All
Couldn't resist sharing this one, via UpNorthica. I think I especially enjoy the graphic on the side of the box. As if the name doesn't say it all...I guess we need a turd visual, and a turd name.
Yes, I said turd. And it still makes me giggle.

A Friendly Game of Slippery Twister, Anyone?
Tonight I wanted to do some baking, so on my way home from work today I stopped at the gas station to pick up some eggs. While there I noticed the frozen pizzas were on sale, so I picked one up to stick in the freezer.
While checking out, the cashier said, "wow, that's something I've never seen together before, eggs and pizza."
I didn't really think it was that weird, but I guess considering the location it might be a bit of an unusual purchase. Nonetheless it got me thinking about other strange purchase combinations.
One time that comes to mind is several years back when I stopped in the Indianola, IA Wal-Mart with a friend. He purchased three Twister games for a "human Twister" Halloween costume I was helping him out with. He was also doing some work on the vehicles at his dad's place, so he picked up a 5-gallon jug of motor oil, and we were on our way.
So there we were, a male and female going through the line to purchase nothing but Twister and a big jug of oil. I'll let you connect the dots there. Needless to say we got a raised eyebrow from the cashier.
Any weird purchase combinations you can share?

"Marking" the Occasion
Yesterday was our anniversary. We really hadn’t made any concrete plans, and the day before I had the opportunity to get some Minnesota Twins tickets from a co-worker. We decided that would be a fun thing to do, so we celebrated 2 years of wedded bliss at the Metrodome. We shared nachos. Very romantic. (Twins lost to Baltimore, 5-3).
The real excitement, though, came before we even left for the game. We were playing with Buddy a little bit, feeling bad about having to put him back in the crate so soon after we got home. Nothing gets his tail wagging more than a tennis ball – he loves for us to throw it down the hallway downstairs so he can fetch it and bring it back. Husband wanted to see what he would do with TWO tennis balls. It was quite funny; he would bring one back, roll it to Husband, and be off after the second one that was thrown. He was loving it, and it was pretty cute. He was really excited. So excited in fact, that when we stopped, he peed. On the carpet.
I quickly grabbed his collar and started dragging him toward the back door, zig-zagging all the way. Once we got to the door, he actually stopped to pee on the doorframe. As if we weren’t inches from outside. I got him out the door and he was still peeing. Apparently he had been storing it up! I put him on the zip line and shut the door so he would get the message I was upset and that is something he should definitely not do (the worst thing to Buddy is if you give him the cold shoulder – he loves attention).
Exasperated, I came back to the moment and heard chuckling in the background. Husband said “have you seen this yet?” I turned around slowly, and to my horror, there was pee EVERYWHERE. That zig-zagging I mentioned? Yeah, he was peeing the whole time. Luckily, minus the initial offense to the carpet, it was all on tile. I followed the trail around the corner and we both just bursted out laughing.
That was the first “accident,” and it probably could have been prevented. I know this because as we were cleaning it up, I asked,
“So did you take him outside when you got home?” (Husband got home before me and let Buddy out of the crate)
“Um….yes? I think so?”
Which in Husband speak means, “probably not.” Poor puppers! He’d been holding that pee in for so long, and the tennis ball game just got him too excited. So excited he peed his proverbial pants.
Safe to say we won’t forget this anniversary anytime soon!

What Happened Here?
Lastnight I was making cookies for the boys to take on their upcoming fishing trip. When I'm making cookies I like to get out a little wax paper to set the cookies on to cool. So I pulled out the box, and lo and behold...
The last time the wax paper was used, I handed it to my dad so he could insert it behind some pieces of closet door stop that we wanted to install, but still needed to be stained. When I cleaned up the room I just tossed the box back into the kitchen drawer without another thought. Apparently he cut the whole roll to suit his needs! :)
I'd say getting a nice finished room is worth FAR more than a roll of wax paper, I just thought it was funny!

Don't Sweat It
I was searching the net for some home remedies for common ailments, and came across this enlightening discussion on perspiration. Thought you might enjoy.
"Perspiration is usually not excessive when a woman is in good general health, or when it is not a result of violent exercise or unusual temperature conditions. But when it is habitual and unchecked it robs a young woman or girl of all that charm of daintiness and appeal which is her right and privilege. There is no odor more immediately and more resentfully noticed than that of dried perspiration. It clings not only to the body, but to the clothes. Perfumes and scented powders do not hide it, and it always awakens disgust.
Frequent bathing, frequent change of undergarments and stockings, and a free use of talcum powder or "odorono" are all indicated. Never imagine that the use of talcum instead of soap and water will do away with this unhappy scent. After washing, always and invariably after washing, is powder to be used. The poet has coined the phrase "honest sweat." But there is no such thing as "honest sweat" in feminine beauty's bright lexicon of charm. Perspiration, especially at evening affairs, dances, etc., steals away that natural freshness and fragrance of aura which should surround woman."
I couldn't possibly make this up. It's right here.
