We are about 3 weeks in to kindergarten, and Lucy is doing great! But let's hear about it in her words:

Who do you like to sit by at lunch? Ady and Nathan
What's your favorite thing to eat for lunch? Chips
What's your least favorite thing to eat for lunch? Hamburger, because it had spice in it
Why do you like your teacher? Because she helps me do stuff, like art projects
Why is your mascot a tiger? Because tigers want to be nice to people
Do you like school? Why? Because it's friendly with other people, and I love other people that I meet

Holiday Program
Program night at school! The theme was "Gingerbread Kids" so all the kids wore a cute little brown paper gingerbread suit over their clothes.

Lucy sang the whole time and despite seeming a little annoyed for awhile that the girl next to her was not singing, she had a good time.

New School Year
Although Lucy has officially been in a preschool room since the end of February, today marked the start of her first full year of preschool. She has the same teacher, but a different classroom and different classmates, so it carried all of the excitement that a typical "first day of school" should bring. This year she also shares preschool with her best buddy, Nathan, who just started. Can't wait to see what new things this year will bring!

Spring Program
Tonight Lucy's school had its spring program. It was a barnyard theme, and each of the different classes were dressed as different animals - cows, ducks, and pigs for the preschoolers, and ducks for the toddlers. Lucy was a very adorable cow. The program was pretty cute, all farm animal-themed songs, some traditional ("Old MacDonald") and some created especially for the program ("We are the Cows," to the tune of "The Adams Family"). Grandpa Lee, Marcey, Candy, and Hayley all came to watch.
Lucy was pretty matter-of-fact about it all; not cracking many smiles. She sang everything, but for the first song she had her fingers in her mouth. One of the directors said she was leading the singing all week in practice, but I guess she was feeling a little shy at the program! She also took the cow costume off pretty quickly afterwards, so I couldn't get a very good photo. But a fun time was had by all!

"I'm a Preschooler!"
At the end of February, Lucy transitioned out of the toddler room into a preschool room at her daycare/school. They had been trying to transition her slowly over a few weeks, but eventually gave up because once she got a taste of life with the "big kids," she didn't want to go back! Her teachers said some kids are just ready, and she was one.
I thought she was learning a lot in the toddler room, but seeing her growth since starting in preschool has been so much fun. We hear a lot more songs, letters, numbers, days of the week, months, etc. etc. etc.! We had a little conference a couple of weeks ago, and her teacher said she has made a great transition. She loves her craft time and it's hard to get her away from using markers and scissors (two forbidden mediums in the toddler room). She is coloring with much more purpose and using more patterns, shapes, and colors. She also loves her music class every Friday, and has a lot of fun with all of her friends. Her biggest challenge is that some days she does not like to listen to her teachers and clean up (hmmm, sounds just like home!), and sometimes she and her little friend P.J. have to be separated because they like to tussle over good spots to sit or gang up on the teacher in their non-listening. But overall, her teacher said that Lucy is kind and plays well with others. Some of her toddler friends are now starting to making the transition to preschool, and she likes to show them around and as her teacher puts it, is like a "big sister." What more could a parent ask for?
Around home we often hear, "I can do it, I'm a preschooler!" It's a little bittersweet to see our little girl expressing her independence so fully, but we're very proud of her!
