I’ve Been Meaning to Ask…

What is this? It's in a birch tree in our front yard.

Theories (in no particular order):
1) The sac is filled with what will eventually be a bajillion baby spiders.

2) A caterpillar made a wish and said “hey, supersize me!”

3) Beneath the silk, there is a writhing ball of centipedes.

4) Some bird is decorating early for Halloween.

5) There is a huge nest of worms in there, which will soon die and be littered all over the lawn.

6) It’s an alien pod of some sort.

What’s your vote? Can anyone provide an actual explanation?

I noticed a lot of these "webs" on tress in Iowa. Dad pointed a few out to me as well....and said they are some sort of silk worm??? They eventually eat all the leaves, leaving the leaves as skeletons and then eventually eating the whole thing, killing parts of the tree, I'm thinking? I guess they are more popular this year for some reason. We noticed them also along I-29 on our trips to Iowa and back.

You should know if it is # 6. Are you not in outer space right now?----See previous post----Maybe it's your landing pad when aliens throw you out??

I don't have an answer, but I might have nightmares now because of the writhing ball of centipedes! Groosssss! Aren't you afraid they're going to break loose and come attack you in the middle of the night??!! Oh god!!

Tony says it is like a silk worm. They will eventually kill your tree if allowed to. We have had a few in the apple orchard this summer. Tony cuts the infested part of the tree and burns it right on the spot. We haven't researched why they appear but it seems as though there have been many sightings of these nasty buggers this summer! We have seen where they literally have eaten all the leaves off the trees and just leave a skeleton as Emily said.
